Final Post for 2010. Happy New Year.

Image
Annie in Barby, in "Dog Shit" lane, in 2000. With Esme in the pram, Bella and Oker. Bella is still alive at about 18, thats the smaller dog. We have come a long way from Barby, we now live in NZ. Oker moved to France with my friend Martyn Greehalgh, until he died last year. My beloved old boy. Bella had puppies in NZ and we have her granddaughter Trixie to carry the line on. Bella ate most of the Christmas tree chocolate, and washed it down with champagne that I dropped on the floor, lapping it up so fast, the floor was dry before I could get to it with a mop. Other dogs would have been very ill, but Bella seems to thrive on the stuff. I am surprised she doesn't smoke cigars. And of course Oliver Maillard was born in Christchurch in 2004. Happy New Year.

Kodachrome last remaining film roll developed in Kansas

Kodachrome was the first commercial film to successfully shoot in colour Continue reading the main story Related stories We set the theme; you take the pictures Polaroid fans try to manufacture film The final roll of Kodachrome film, a widely-lauded quality colour film, is to be developed in Kansas on Thursday. Kodak announced it was discontinuing the iconic film in 2009, after competition from digital cameras caused a large sales decline. Kodachrome is difficult to process, requiring expert handlers, and Dwayne's Photo in Kansas is the sole remaining developer. The last film to be developed was shot by the owner, Dwayne Steinle. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-12095771

Old Links from my first web site "Shadow Land"

I started this site in 1997, when I look at the design, I realise how far the web has come in 13 years. Most of the links still work and are quite interesting. Site Description Stedelijk Museum The Stedelijk, Amsterdam, is one of the worlds top museums for contemporary art. It holds a significant collection of photographs, and is host to many of the best touring exhibitions. The recent August Sander exhibition is a case in point, and the Web Site has some useful background information on Sander, if few images. Fotomuseum The excellent Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland. A very thoroughly presented web site with a few great images and plenty of contextual information. The text, however, is in German. George Eastman House; International Museum of Photography and Film A really good site - Biographical details

Picasso or Van Gogh would have snapped one up," the artist David Hockney tells me at the opening of his latest show in Paris called Fleurs Fraiches, or Fresh Flowers. The boyish grand old man of pop art with silver hair and lambent eyes is well known for his recent conversion to the iPhone and iPad for his work. photo book review in almost every picture #7 photographs collected & edited by Erik Kessels and Joep Eljkens http://www.lensculture.com/kessels.html In almost every picture #7 tells the story of a Dutch woman whose life is seen from the point of view of a fairground shooting gallery. The chronological series begins in 1936, when a 16-year-old girl from Tilburg in Holland picks up a gun and shoots at the target in a shooting gallery. Every time she hits the target, it triggers the shutter of a camera and a portrait of the girl in firing pose is taken and given as a prize. And so a lifelong love affair with the shooting gallery begins. This series documents almost every year of the woman's life (there is a conspicuous pause from 1939 to 1945) up until present times. At the age of 88 Ria van Dijk still makes her pilgrimage to the Shooting Gallery. In almost every picture #7 is a biography of one woman

Only three locations left, then more post production

Oh How I don't like Post-production, at least I don't have to stand in a dark room all day. Me after being told I couldn't possibly take good photographs. I just smiled, every one is a photographer.

Into the Sun with a scanning back.

Scanning back with no filtration, phase one 360 MP 125th of a second x 12000. Nikon 65 mm enlarging lens. I was exposing Polaroids here to, I wonder how they will compare. Its much easier with a scanning back and laptop, then carting around a bucket of water for the 665 Positive Negative film.

Scanning back and 65mm enlarging lens, 360mp

Using my Graflex 5x4 field and scanning back with no filtration, makes for a very sharp image with the old Nikon 65mm enlarging lens, but not quite enough coverage.

We took the children to Hanmer Springs for a break from the after shocks. As we know Hanmer is right on the main fault line that runs down the middle of the South Island. I worried constantly about a mirror shock happening . It would be a devastating quake here. Only felt a little one over the two days. We are still sleeping together in one room with the truck loaded up with escape equipment and survival gear. Every time a truck went by, my heart jumped a bit. Used my old Polaroid pack 100 camera, and type 665 pos neg film that expired in 1999. It still worked with a 3 minute exposure.

We are all a bit tired of these Earth Quakes.

Even though I was brought up in cramped English housing estates, and have a horror of seeing the neigbours eating dinner through the bedroom window. I would live here. A little bit of native planting and landscape design makes all the difference.
