Old Links from my first web site "Shadow Land"

I started this site in 1997, when I look at the design, I realise how far the web has come in 13 years. Most of the links still work and are quite interesting.

Site Description
Stedelijk Museum
The Stedelijk, Amsterdam, is one of the worlds top museums for contemporary art. It holds a significant collection of photographs, and is host to many of the best touring exhibitions. The recent August Sander exhibition is a case in point, and the Web Site has some useful background information on Sander, if few images.
Fotomuseum
The excellent Fotomuseum in Winterthur, Switzerland. A very thoroughly presented web site with a few great images and plenty of contextual information. The text, however, is in German.
George Eastman House; International Museum of Photography and Film
A really good site - Biographical details on the man who founded Kodak and with it popular photography, information on the museum archives, access to images from current exhibitions and even a virtual tour of Eastmans house. Well worth a visit.
National Museum of Photography, Film and Television
The Web Site for this award winning museum, based in Bradford, includes details of both permanent and temporary exhibitions, with virtual viewing options, as well as information and contact details for the many archive collections held at the site (such as the Talbot Collection, and the Tony Ray-Jones Archive). A list of the other national photography collections is a useful feature, as are a number of information pages relating to processes, conservation and books pertinent to the museums collections.
Centre for Creative Photography (CCP), University of Arizona Co-Founded by Ansel Adams, CCP is an excellent resource site to visit. The collections are accessible and well presented, as are current exhibitions and archive holdings.
La Maison Europenne de la Photographie New institution that opened in Paris last year to support and exhibit contemporary photography. Also holds significant collections of images, films and books, starting from 1958. Some images are reproduced on the Web Site and there are a few educational texts.
The Amon Carter Museum Houses one of the top collections of photographs in the states. Web site lacks many reproductions of the museums photographic holdings but does give a very decent summary of what is there.
Helios; National Museum Of American Art - Photography On-Line Very, very well thought out presentation of an excellent collection. Many different ways to browse the collection (which is on-line), from guided tours, to critical selections, to thematic pathways. You can even send digital postcards of images from the collection. Impressive.
Museum of the City of New York - Prints and Photographs Collection Museum devoted to New Yorks life and history. Includes a major photographic collection, which features Jacob Riis, Berenice Abbot, the LOOK magazine archive and more.
UCR/California Museum of Photography Another excellent American museum. Both collections and exhibitions are visually accessible, with coherent supporting texts. Well worth browsing.
ICP - International Centre for Photography (New York) Clearly an interesting organisation. It operates as a school, a museum and interpretive centre, and a resource for practising photographers. The web site is little more than an introduction however.
Library Of Congress (USA) - American Memory A superb resource for any research on the United States. Well on the way to becoming a comprehensive virtual library, it utilises photographs, prints, audio and texts to tell the story of the American nation.
Museum of Modern Art, New York MoMA has undoubtedly got one of the best photography collections in the world, yet the Web Site only allows access to a handful of them. Still worth visiting as an important resource contact.
Southeast Museum of Photography Very good series of exhibitions on-line, both present and past, showing international contemporary work by recognised and up-and-coming photographers.
Photo Perspectives (sadly gone)Photo Perspectives is an interactive photography museum, with exhibitions, accompanying information, and the chance to give feedback. A good site to visit.
National Portrait Gallery Collects portraits of figures eminent to British history. The photographic collection is one part of a whole that places no restriction on medium. The web site is weak on image content but very good on the specifics of current exhibitions and recent purchases.
Museum of the History of Science, Oxford University The Museum holds some early examples of daguerreotypes, calotypes, etc... that are accessible on screen.
Ministere de Culture (France) Links (in french) to the network of museums and photographic institutions in France.
Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography Canadas own institution devoted to contemporary photography. The exhibitions section is very interesting, with good on-screen reproductions. Access to the archive of 158,000 images is however limited to contact details only.
Muybridge, Eadweard The Kingston Museum holds a vast collection of Muybridges photographic work. This Web Site shows some of the collection and gives a little historical background.
Remembering Nagasaki The haunting photographs of Yosuke Yamahata taken the day after the atom bomb had dropped. This virtual exhibition forms part of the digital library of the Exploratorium, an educational on-line interactive museum of the arts, sciences and humanities.
The Smithsonian Institute The Smithsonian Institute is a vast assembly of museums and research units devoted to the past 150 years of American history. Their Photos Online selection gives an broad spread of opportunities to view images and texts related to the Smithsonians different activities.
